Indian Rivers – 100 MCQs (My Real Study Notes)

So, I started preparing Indian Rivers for exams like OSSSC, UPSC, SSC, Railway… and honestly, at first I thought — “Bas rivers hi toh hain, easy hoga.”

But when I solved MCQs… I got confused 😅
Like which river is tributary of which, which flows where, dams location… everything mixed up.

Then I changed my approach. Instead of mugging, I started understanding flow and patterns.

And trust me, it became much easier.

I’m sharing the same way I studied — simple, real, and practical.

1. Types of Rivers in India

When I first studied this, I didn’t understand the difference.

But now it’s clear.

Two main types:

  • Himalayan Rivers
  • Peninsular Rivers

My simple trick:

  • Himalayan → long, perennial (water all year)
  • Peninsular → seasonal (depend on rain)

Example:

  • Ganga River → Himalayan
  • Godavari River → Peninsular

2. Himalayan Rivers

This part is very important.

Major rivers:

  • Ganga River
  • Yamuna River
  • Brahmaputra River

My trick:

These rivers start from Himalayas and flow long distance.

One insight:

Most important river system = Ganga system

3. Peninsular Rivers

These rivers are shorter and seasonal.

Important rivers:

  • Godavari River
  • Krishna River
  • Mahanadi River

My trick:

South India rivers = Peninsular

Example:

Mahanadi is important for Odisha.

4. Tributaries (Important for MCQs)

This part confused me a lot earlier 😅

Example:

  • Yamuna → tributary of Ganga
  • Son → tributary of Ganga

My trick:

Main river = big river
Tributary = joins it

Tip:

Don’t try to learn all. Focus on major ones.

5. Dams in India

This is very important.

Important dams:

  • Hirakud Dam → on Mahanadi River
  • Bhakra Nangal Dam → on Sutlej
  • Tehri Dam → on Ganga

My trick:

Remember dam + river together.

Example:

Hirakud → Mahanadi (very common question)

How I Study Rivers

Earlier I tried to memorize names.

Didn’t work.

Now I do:

  • See map
  • Understand flow
  • Practice MCQs

Sample MCQs

1. Ganga is which type of river?
Answer: Himalayan

2. Yamuna is tributary of?
Answer: Ganga

3. Hirakud Dam is on which river?
Answer: Mahanadi

4. Godavari is which type of river?
Answer: Peninsular

5. Brahmaputra flows through?
Answer: Assam

Mistakes I Made

1. Mugging without understanding

Forgot quickly.

2. Mixing tributaries

Got confused.

3. Ignoring map

Big mistake.

One Small Insight

Rivers are easy if you visualize them.

Don’t just read — imagine flow.

One Relatable Example

I used to confuse Krishna and Godavari.

Then I saw map once, and now I remember clearly.

My Personal Tips

1. Use map

Very helpful.

2. Focus on important rivers

Don’t overload.

3. Practice MCQs

Best way to learn.

4. Revise regularly

Very important.

Final Thoughts

Indian Rivers topic is very scoring.

But only if you understand, not mug.

Just remember:

  • Learn basic flow
  • Connect rivers & dams
  • Practice MCQs

Even 1 hour daily is enough.

MCQ Practice Rules

  • Read question carefully
  • Don’t confuse names
  • Eliminate wrong options
  • Revise mistakes

So finally, this is the full practice set I promised.
When I started solving full sets like this, I realized one thing — revision + practice together = best combo.

Don’t try to solve all at once. I usually do 25–30 questions at a time.
